A survey performed in the Guaratuba Bay (25º52'S; 48º39'W) and the adjacent marine area has provided additional data about the habits of the croaker in the southern coast of Brazil. A dynamic pattern of movements along the marine and estuarine waters was observed, but it does not indicate spawning activity in the study area. During autumn/winter, pre-adults and adults use the marine waters. In spring/summer, following gonadal maturation, the individuals leave this area and probably move to deeper waters, where they spawn. Until the end of summer, the estuary is then occupied by juveniles coming from the marine spawning area. In autumn/winter, these juveniles and the new pre-adults move to the marine zone adjacent to the bay and begin gonadal maturation. It...

Pathogenic Vibrio species isolated from estuarine environments (Ceará, Brazil) - antimicrobial resistance and virulence potential profiles Anais da ABC (AABC)
MENEZES,FRANCISCA G.R. DE; RODRIGUEZ,MARINA T.T.; CARVALHO,FÁTIMA C.T. DE; REBOUÇAS,ROSA H.; COSTA,RENATA A.; SOUSA,OSCARINA V. DE; HOFER,ERNESTO; VIEIRA,REGINE H.S.F..
ABSTRACT Detection of virulent strains associated with aquatic environment is a current concern for the management and control of human and animal health. Thus, Vibrio diversity was investigated in four estuaries from state of Ceará (Pacoti, Choró, Pirangi and Jaguaribe) followed by antimicrobial susceptibility to different antimicrobials used in aquaculture and detection of main virulence factors to human health. Isolation and identification were performed on TCBS agar (selective medium) and dichotomous key based on biochemical characteristics, respectively. Nineteen strains of genus Vibrio were catalogued. Vibrio parahaemolyticus (Choró River) and V. alginolyticus (Pacoti River) were the most abundant species in the four estuaries. All strains were...

Plasma ion levels of freshwater and marine/estuarine teleosts from Southern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Becker,Alexssandro Geferson; Gonçalves,Jamile Fabbrin; Toledo,Jaderson dos Anjos; Burns,Marcelo D. M.; Garcia,Luciano de Oliveira; Vieira,João Paes; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The purpose of this study was to investigate Na+, Cl-, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ levels in the plasma of freshwater and marine/estuarine teleosts collected at different salinities (0 to 34) from the estuarine and freshwater portions of the São Gonçalo channel in Southern Brazil. Any relationship between plasma ion levels and salinity and the capacity of ionic regulation of teleosts found at three or more different salinities (Genidens barbus and Micropogonias furnieri) was also investigated. Results showed no relationship between plasma ion levels and salinity when considering all species together, but the two species collected from three or more different salinities showed a significant positive relationship between plasma ion levels and salinity, indicating...

POLYCHAETES FROM RED MANGROVE (Rhizophora mangle) AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE WATER CONDITIONS IN THE GULF OF URABÁ, COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN Acta biol.Colomb.
FERNÁNDEZ-RODRÍGUEZ,Vanessa; LONDOÑO-MESA,Mario H.; RAMÍREZ-RESTREPO,John Jairo.
Polychaetes play a significant role in benthic communities' ecology; they dominate the infauna, recycle nutrients from the water column and are commonly used as biological indicators. Along the Gulf of Urabá (Colombian Caribbean), particularly for the zones of the Marirrío Bay and the Rionegro Cove, there are no reports about ecological aspects of polychaete species; only a few taxonomic studies have been conducted. In this research we evaluate the relationship between polychaete species associated with red mangrove roots, Rhizophora mangle, and some physicochemical variables of the water column; also, we made some notes about the spatial distributions of polychaetes species within the two study areas. We found that the environmental variables that best...

Duque, G.; Acero, P.A..
In tropical estuaries, most fishes feed at different hours during the day. To determine the daily ration and consumption of the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta (CGSM) population of Anchovia clupeoides monthly samplings of a 24 h cycle were taken at the coastal lagoon between October 1995 and June 1996. A total of 4389 specimens were examined. The population of A. clupeoides consumes almost twice its weight per year, representing a 0.53% of its body weight per day. Though the CGSM presents a high primary production (990 gC/m2 /year), the percentage that is transferred to the population of A. clupeoides is relatively low (0.055%). Hence, it seems that the high productivity of the CGSM is not being transferred to upper trophic levels due to the kind of...

Caumette, P.
In the deepest parts of the estuarine region of Ebrie Lagoon (Abidjan Africa, (5 degree N, 4 degree W) stratified conditions have been observed during the rainy season (May to Nov.), owing to salinity differences between oxic and anoxic layers. At the interface, 3-4 m depth, phototrophic bacteria (Chromatium, Chlorobium and Pelodictyon ) developed, forming a brown layer due to their different pigments. Their production has been estimated at 41% of the total photosynthetic production during high stratification (Sep. 1981) and their biomass was used by the copepod population for 40 to 60% of its diet. During the dry season, the water column became homogeneous and oxygen was detected to 6m depth. The brown layer of phototrophic bacteria disappeared, as well...

Sex differences on the feeding of the gobiid fish Bathygobius soporator in tide pools of Maiandeua Island, Pará, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Soares,Bruno E.; Lobato,Cleonice M. C.; Freitas,Danielly T. H.; Oliveira-Raiol,Roberta D.; Montag,Luciano F. A..
Abstract Bathygobius soporator (Valenciennes, 1837) is one of the most common fishes in tide pools in the estuary of Pará state, and has an omnivorous feeding habit. This study examined the diet of the species in Maiandeua Island, and aimed to: (i) describe the diet of B. soporator through indexes based on the occurrence and weight of consumed items; and (ii) evaluate if there is variation in diet composition between males and females. Frequency of Occurrence, frequency of weight and Alimentary Index were calculated for each item, and differences in the diet composition of males and females were observed through multivariate analyses (ANOSIM, NMDS and SIMPER). Bathygobius soporator presented carnivorous feeding habit, eating mainly crustaceans, and...

Simultaneous use of strontium:calcium and barium:calcium ratios in otoliths as markers of habitat: Application to the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) in the Adour basin, South West France ArchiMer
Tabouret, Helene; Bareille, G.; Claverie, F.; Pecheyran, C.; Prouzet, Patrick; Donard, O. F. X..
Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca ratios in water from the Adour estuary show a clear relationship with the salinity of the surrounding water for salinities <20, while ratios are almost constant above this level of salinity. A Positive relationship was observed for the Sr:Ca ratio, whereas it was inverse for the Ba Ca ratio. These two elemental ratios were measured in the otoliths of the European eels (Anguilla anguilla L) using femtosecond laser ablation linked to an ICP-MS (fs-LA ICP-MS) There was a direct relationship between the elemental ratios recorded in eel otoliths and those found in water from fresh and marine areas, suggesting that Sr Ca and Ba:Ca ratios in eel otoliths can be used as markers of habitat in this estuary Continuous profiling allowed the...

Size distribution of the jack Chloroscombrus chrysurus (Linnaeus) (Actinopterygii, Carangidae) in a tropical bay at Southeastern Brazil Zoologia
Costa,Marcus R. da; Albieri,Rafael J.; Araújo,Francisco G..
Chloroscombrus chrysurus (Linnaeus, 1766) is the most abundant representant of the Carangidae family in the Sepetiba bay, a c.a. 450 km² semi-closed coastal area in the Southeastern Brazil. We analyze fish (number, weight and size) and environmental data to assess the part of life history of this species in tropical embayment environments. Fish sampling were taken in triplicates by monthly bottom trawls, in three bay zones (inner, middle and outer), defined according to a spatial gradient of depth and salinity. Juveniles were firstly caught in the inner bay zone measuring 30-90 mm total length - TL (mode = 60 mm TL) in Spring. Then they move toward the middle and outermost part of the bay in Summer-Autumn (120-180 mm TL), following a seaward migration to...

Spatial and temporal distribution of fish eggs and larvae in a subtropical coastal lagoon, Santa Catarina State, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Macedo-Soares,Luis C. P.; Birolo,Alesandra B.; Freire,Andrea S..
This study investigated the variation in abundance, distribution and composition of ichthyoplankton in a lagoon in southern Brazil through the year and at different stations within the lagoon. Ibiraquera Lagoon is a shallow coastal lagoon connected to the sea by a semi-permanent sandbar. Ichthyoplankton samples were collected monthly from December 2003 to December 2004, with a 200 µm mesh net using horizontal surface hauls. A colder, drier period was detected, contrasting with warm months during which salinity varied depending on rainfall and whether the sandbar was open or closed. The mean abundance of ichthyoplankton over the study period was 459.6 ± 76.2 (SE) eggs · 100 m-3 and 63.6 ± 7.9 (SE) larvae · 100 m-3, and they were present during all months....

Spatial distribution and increase of microplastics over time in sediments of Buenaventura Bay, Colombian Pacific Boletín de Investigaciones
Vásquez-Molano,Daniela; Molina,Andres; Duque,Guillermo.
ABSTRACT The increase in production, consumption and inadequate disposition of plastics has generated an accumulation of these elements in marine ecosystems, which have become important microplastics sinks (< 5 mm). The objective of this research was to determine the temporal and spatial differences in the density, distribution, and type of microplastics in the sediments of Buenaventura Bay. For this purpose, sediment samples were collected in the internal estuary (close to the rivers) and in the external estuary (with a greater marine influence). Samples were obtained in the dry, transition, and rainy season for the years 2015 and 2019. Microplastics were extracted by density separation method, each particle was classified and measured by optical...

= Wader populations and macrozoobenthos in a changing estuary: the Oosterschelde (The Netherlands) OMA
Meire, P..
